Damage

The negative emotions of the third movement are expanded upon, to emphasise the consequences of climate change impact. In particular, the music focuses on the struggle between natural order and that of the increased disturbances on the ecosystem through climate change.

The rainfall is heard more forcefully, as it is played louder and heard with the powerful strikes of the bass drum, together with the shaker and cymbal-lightning. Unlike the other movements, there is no peaceful introduction with wildlife. When the wildlife from the flutes do appear, they are struggling against the forceful weather.

Where the music becomes more quiet, it is not in a peaceful way. A feeling of uncertainty and instability is provided with the change in musical harmony. This communicates the climate change on both the ecosystem and in the wider world. There is uncertainty for the survival of certain habitats and a negative future for all lifeforms, as the impact continues.

As in the third movement, the music becomes more complex in places. The complexity communicates the struggles between order and chaos as mentioned previously, but also the idea that we must work together to find solutions which may not be simple ones, but are necessary ones.

The music may leave you feeling a very different emotion to the peaceful, tranquil parts of the earlier movements. The difference may help create a memorable listening experience and possibly help keep the topic of climate change impact in mind.
